Spreading Peace with Pinwheels

Fourth-graders in Chris Fishman’s homeroom class at Chagrin Falls Intermediate School created pinwheels to help celebrate the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21.

The “Pinwheels for Peace,” as they are being called, were created out of paper, straws, wire, beads and other common materials. Once the pinwheels were created, they lined the property of the Chagrin Falls Intermediate School as a reminder to be accepting and peace-builders in their families, school, community and world.

“They’re really fun to create and watch, but they are also important symbols of our intent to learn tolerance and spread understanding,” said fourth-grade teacher Chris Fishman. “My fondest wish would be that these young students become involved in peace activism for a lifetime, shaping a more humane planet, starting right here at the Chagrin Falls Intermediate School.”

The International Day of Peace idea came about because of Jeremy Gilley. In 1999, he founded an organization called Peace One Day that was focused around the idea of creating an annual day of ceasefire and non-violence. It wasn’t until 2001 when a unanimous vote by the member states of the United Nations agreed with Gilley’s idea and declared Sept. 21 International Day of Peace.
