Students Take Walking Field Trip
Seventh-grade students from St. Helen School took advantage of the beautiful fall weather and proximity to Punderson State Park by taking a walking field trip on Oct. 14. For the second year in a row, middle school science teacher Natalie Hudak utilized equipment from the Great Lakes National Programming Office to test the water quality of lakes and ponds in local parks.
The project was a great way for students to gain experience with scientific processes they will be using in their science fair projects later in the year. The students also learned that science does not just take place in labs, but can be a part of careers that let them enjoy the outdoors.
In addition to testing water, students hiked about four miles around the park and learned about various tree species and vegetation along the way from Gregg Gannon. The group returned to the school, crossing state Route 87 on foot, a little bit muddy, a little bit tired, but full of great memories.
