Q Weds U
The Chardon Early Learning Center’s kindergarten classes excitedly attended the annual Q and U wedding on Nov. 18. The academic event held in the school’s gymnasium is designed to add whimsy to student learning, reinforcing the concept that the letters Q and U are always united in the English language.
Superintendent Michael Hanlon served as this year’s wedding officiant for Q and U played by kindergarten students Zander Mormile and Madelynn Hall, respectively, while the bride and groom’s peers and the kindergarten teachers dressed up as the other 24 alphabet letters, attending the event as guests.
In lieu of wedding gifts, kindergarten students brought in food donations, filling multiple bins to be donated to the local church food bank. A cupcake reception followed the wedding.
Preschoolers Cast Votes
On Election Day, Nov. 8, Chardon Early Learning Center pre-kindergarten students in Kristen Sironen’s morning and afternoon classes learned about what it means to vote. The learning unit was made complete by a just-their-size, handmade voting booth in the classroom. The booth was fully equipped with a ballot, clipboard, pencil, and privacy to cast a vote.
Once in the booth, students needed to make their big decision – if they prefer cheese or pepperoni pizza — the only question on the ballot.
After the ballots were counted, the results revealed a very close race with pepperoni pizza emerging as the winner for both classes.
Ratios, Stats & Probability
The 2022 Chardon Baseball Div-II State Champs, including both head coach Brian Long and student athletes, provided an informative and interactive presentation at Chardon Middle School on Nov. 4 for 7th-Grade Baseball Day, a culminating math unit event for the CMS Hilltoppers.
Coach Long led the energetic, one-hour presentation on his team’s use of ratios, stats and probability and the crucial role applied analytics plays in team success.
Chardon baseball student athletes participating in the presentation included Jake Barker, Leo Colombi, Ethan Faber, Brandon Fatur, Stone Fawcett, Heath Fetchik, Hunter Greco, Nolan Kirsh, Austin Leszynski and Will Francis.
Following the presentation, seventh-graders were treated to an hour outdoors, playing wiffle ball with the varsity team. The CMS PTO generously provided a stadium-themed snack of hot dogs and popcorn.
School’s Food Drive Delivers
Throughout the month of November, Chardon Middle School students, their families and staff generously contributed over 1,100 non-perishable food items to a food drive led by the school’s Builders Club and Student Council.
Just before Thanksgiving break, on Nov. 22, the clubs’ students and staff advisors teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of Chardon to gather, deliver and sort the massive collection for delivery to the Geauga Hunger Task Force in order to support community members in need.
Craft Fair Success
Chardon High School’s first-ever holiday craft show held on Nov. 26 was well attended and supported by both community vendors and shoppers, amassing nearly $1,200 in donations for Jeremy’s Kids whose mission is to provide gifts for Geauga County families in need each holiday season.
The event was initiated and planned by seniors Faith Kilfoyle and Sydney Murray as their second-quarter community project via the Educational Options Leadership independent study program.
Principal Doug Murray stated, “Thank you to all those who participated and came to the day. We will make this an annual event at Chardon High School.”
