Communications Director Earns Excellence Awards

Chardon Schools Communications Director Kelly Misch has earned three 2023 Mark of Excellence Awards from the Ohio Schools Public Relations Association in the categories of e-newsletter, social media and writing. Misch was presented with the awards by OHSPRA during its annual spring conference held on April 27 in Westerville.

In the e-newsletter category, Misch earned a Mark of Excellence for the district’s all-staff newsletter “Hilltopper Happenings,” which launched this past fall, while the social media Mark of Excellence award is specific to the Chardon Schools Facebook page, which has amassed over 3,200 followers in the four years since Misch’s hiring in 2019.

Misch was selected for a third 2023 Mark of Excellence award for writing “Volunteerism and Generosity Pump Up Heart Day”, an in-depth news article about the “Heart Day” educational event held at Chardon Middle School this school year.

The district’s Topper Talk community e-newsletter is also an award-winning publication, garnering an OHSPRA Mark of Excellence Award in 2022.

Board Acquires Washington Street Property

The Chardon Board of Education approved the purchase of property during the Board’s special meeting held on May 2. The property, acquired for nearly $1.7 million, is located on Washington Street and encompasses approximately 21,000 square feet of building space on about 6.56 acres of land.

Superintendent Mike Hanlon stated, “This acquisition will allow Chardon Schools to pursue a multi-year relocation project that consolidates the district’s transportation and maintenance operations from the high school campus, and business affairs offices from the Hambden campus to one shared location on Washington Street. The relocation will also free up land on existing properties to create additional opportunities. As one example, moving transportation and maintenance would vacate space at the north end of the high school property for a possible expansion of parking and improvement of traffic flow at the school.”

District Awarded EPA Grant

Chardon Schools has been named a recipient of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s 2023 Recycle Ohio Water Bottle Refilling Station Grant award. This award, in excess of $8,300, was announced by the Ohio EPA on April 25. The grant is earmarked for the district’s purchase of water bottle refilling station equipment.

Congratulations to Chardon Schools Treasurer/CFO Deb Armbruster on her success in securing the grant. The grant-funded equipment will be installed by the district at Chardon High School (three stations), Chardon Middle School (two stations) and Park Elementary School (one station).
