Noetic Learning Math Contest
Some of Lindsey Elementary School’s top math students competed in the Noetic Learning Math Contest in November. The semiannual problem-solving contest consists of 20 creative math problems to be solved independently.
The fall session challenged over 27,000 elementary and middle school students from 44 different states nationwide. Four Lindsey students made it onto Noetic’s National Honor Roll, meaning they scored in the top 10 percent amongst all participants. The students were recently recognized at the board of education meeting by gifted coordinator and enrichment specialist Carrie Morgano and Lindsey Elementary Principal Melissa Becerra.
Power of the Pen
WGMS’ eighth-grade Power of the Pen team took second place out of 15 middle schools competing at the recent Lake Erie District tournament hosted by University Schools. The writers, made up of Addie Oja, Tessa Leonard, Aurora Pavick, Laura Troychansky, Gabby Ohlsen and Janna Winningham, participated in three rounds of narrative writing. Having to respond in 40 minutes to prompts such as, “You are the only one left. What happened to the others?” – the team shined with creativity. Gabby and Janna placed in the top 12 writers overall. The team moves on to the regional tournament in March.

At Lindsey Elementary School, Jason Burch, Leo DiFranco, Anthony Finizia-Boisselle, Meav Hallaran, Hayden Savage, Marissa Starr and Cayden Zahler qualified for a position in school’s spelling bee. They all did an outstanding job clearly spelling and projecting their voices in front of 460 students, teachers and families. The top spellers Libby Mayer, Emilie Wright and Madelyn Detwiler moved on to the district spelling bee.
Geauga Co. Spelling Bee Champ
Congratulations to West Geauga Middle School student Darren Prince-Wright on his spelling bee success. Darren performed well in the West Geauga Middle School building level spelling bee and went on to win the district level spelling bee. Next, he moved on to represent West Geauga at the Geauga County Spelling Bee where he took first place. He will next represent all of Geauga County in the upcoming Tri-County Spelling Bee.
WGMS Student Achievement
The student council at West Geauga Middle School started a new program to commemorate students’ academic achievement. Students earning a 4.0 grade point average (straight A’s) on their semester report card are able to select a new book that was purchased by the student council. The selected book will receive a custom nameplate recognizing the accomplishment. The 4.0 student gets to enjoy the book first, then it is placed back in the classroom library for other students to borrow for years to come. The students who earned a 4.0 for the first and second quarters of this school year recently had the opportunity to select their books.
