AD Earns Statewide Recognition
Brian Hiscox, athletic director for the Berkshire Local Schools, recently won the prestigious Bruce Brown Award of Excellence from the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. In doing so, Hiscox joins only 43 other athletic directors statewide to earn the honor for the high standards and best practices demonstrated in his department.
Nominees are compared against entrants from across the state and must meet rigorous criteria to win the Bruce Brown Award, which is named in recognition of the OIAAA’s first president. Some of the criteria points include a clear mission for the athletic department, educational strategies that link athletic participation to students’ learning experiences, use of technology and media, and affirming points of sports medicine and safety.
Badger Nest and Den Students Explore Job Skills
Students from the Berkshire Badger Nest and Badger Den programs recently experienced an opportunity to visit Maggie’s Donuts and More in Hiram for an instructive hands-on work opportunity. The inclusive event allowed students with special needs to engage in various job skill-building activities while fostering teamwork and collaboration. The day was organized into five interactive workstations and included doughnut decorating, where students got creative by decorating their own doughnuts for dessert, combining fun with fine motor skill practice.
They then participated in extra tasks at Maggie’s, such as placing stickers on containers and stamping boxes, learning organizational skills essential for day-to-day operations. Students also assisted with food preparation, with guidance from Maggie’s staff, and crafted smoothies, breakfast sandwiches and paninis. They enjoyed a well-earned break to savor the food they prepared. Finally, students participated in the soap workshop, discovering the creativity and care involved in crafting handmade products.
The day was a blend of learning, teamwork and fun, providing the students with practical skills and a sense of accomplishment. Maggie’s Donuts and More demonstrated an inspiring commitment to supporting inclusive opportunities for all members of the community.
