One student from Cardinal Mooney High School is in stable condition after being shot at a football game between CMHS and Chardon High School at Stambaugh Stadium the evening of Sept. 20, said CMHS Principal Brendan Considine in a statement.

“Initial reports from tonight’s varsity football game in Youngstown indicate that there was an apparent gunshot following the game as the crowd was exiting the stadium,” Chardon Superintendent Mike Hanlon said in an email to parents, which was later posted to the Chardon Schools Facebook page.

Chardon players, cheerleaders, band members, coaches and staff are safe, he said, adding there was a strong police presence at the stadium immediately after the incident.

Police were on scene almost immediately, Youngstown State University Police Chief Shawn Varso said in an interview Sept. 22.

“The information that we’re putting out is that there was a shot fired at the conclusion of the game. It came from the exit ramps, they go down from the stadium,” he said. “When our officers arrived they encountered an individual who was being helped by two others. When he was asked if he was shot he said no.”

The same individual was later found seated at a bench outside the stadium with a gunshot wound to the leg, Varso said.

“We evaluated him, gave him first aid. (An) ambulance was there immediately on scene and took him on up to the hospital,” he said.

Varso confirmed no arrests have been made at this time.

“One of our students was injured in the shooting and was taken straight to the hospital,” Considine said in his statement. “The student is recovering and in stable condition. The student’s family thanks you for your continued prayers for a full and speedy recovery.”

Considine emphasized that safety and security of students is of the utmost importance at CMHS and expressed prayers for the family and community.

The investigation is ongoing and further details cannot be released yet, Varso said.
