Senior Wins Biliteracy Award
Berkshire senior Nolan Morris has received the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy, an award given by the state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by the time of high school graduation. It encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills attained by students and serves as evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices.
Nolan was awarded the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy award by fulfilling the state’s rigorous requirements for proficiency in both English and Spanish.
When asked what receiving the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy meant to him, Nolan said that he “thinks it’s a great accomplishment and really demonstrates the work that he had put into learning Spanish for the past four years.” He continued by sharing that “it is definitely helpful to know two languages, especially now since we are so connected in and around the world. Many American companies do business in other countries, so being able to communicate with people around the world in their own language is definitely helpful in that aspect.”
Nolan is planning to attend college next year and is considering a major in physical therapy or business.
Students Visit Guadalupe Statue
College Credit Plus Spanish 3 and AP Spanish 4 students recently visited the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe, located in nearby Windsor. The impressive monument honors one of Mexico’s most important national symbols and embodies the country’s cultural identity.
During the visit, students learned about the statue’s construction, the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe and its artistic and cultural significance. The experience offered valuable intercultural exposure and appreciation of the artwork.
The AP Spanish 4 class is currently studying syncretism, which is the blending of different cultural products, practices and perspectives. They will incorporate insights from the visit into their lessons.
