Following the retirement of former Director Michelle Lane in December, the Geauga County Board of Elections tapped Tyler Plants to fill her shoes, Deputy Director Nora McGinnis said in a Jan. 9 press release.
Plants will officially assume the role Jan. 19, she said.
“The board and staff are excited to continue working with Tyler in his new leadership position,” McGinnis said.
According to his resume, Plants has served as the board’s voter registration supervisor since 2023 — a job that entails maintaining and updating voter registration records and data, as well as integrating new policies that affect those records.
Plants began working at the board of elections as a seasonal employee in 2020, his resume said. He previously worked as a social studies educator at the Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve from 2022 to 2023.
A 2021 graduate of Kent State University, Plants holds a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary social studies education and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Professional Studies degree at Lake Erie College, according to his resume.
“During my time working as registration supervisor, I have learned a great deal from my colleagues, as well as from other board of elections staff across the state,” Plants said in his cover letter. “Adaptibility and fluidity are skills I have had to use increasingly as new directives and requirements are implemented from the Secretary of State’s office on down to the local level.”
Each election cycle brings new challenges, and his communication and problem-solving skills have grown rapidly as a result, he said.
“I feel that the team we have in our office is extraordinary and has a very open level of communication and task sharing so that no one becomes overwhelmed or burned out,” he added.
Plants expressed eagerness to begin the new role in a Jan. 12 statement to the Geauga County Maple Leaf.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity and looking forward to the upcoming election cycle,” he said.
