Tressel Promotes Student Fitness
Berkshire Elementary School welcomed State of Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel on Feb. 13 for an assembly and motivational remarks designed to encourage overall health and wellness as part of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge.
Speaking to second-, third- and fourth-grade students in the gymnasium, Tressel used student volunteers to help demonstrate the importance of his key areas of focus, including cardio, strength, flexibility, nutrition and sleep as part of a 30-day statewide program challenge targeting students in grades 3-8.
Tressel shared lessons from his experience in state leadership and his coaching career, which included five national championships, encouraging students to build lifelong healthy habits. His initiative aims to instill lifelong healthy habits and includes a booklet for students to chart their progress and set personal fitness goals.
Superintendent John Stoddard joined Principal Heather Giel and health and fitness teacher Lisa Starr, who is incorporating the Team Tressel Challenge at the school, in leading staff and students in the activity-based presentation. Student volunteers performed pushups, planks, squats and stretched. Staff members joined in toward the end of the presentation.
Adapted Ice Skate Blast
Berkshire’s Badger Lab, Nest and Den students visited Gilmour Academy during the week of Feb. 9 for the annual Adapted Ice Skate Blast. Sponsored by Gilmour’s hockey team, the event provides students with special needs an opportunity to skate and build friendships through a shared experience on the ice.
Outstanding 3rd-Graders Recognized
A group of third-grade students nominated by their classroom teachers were recognized by the East Geauga Kiwanis Club for academic growth and excellence during the second grading period. Each student received a certificate honoring outstanding effort as an East Geauga Kiwanis Outstanding Third Grader for the second grading period.
