Park Paving Planned
Visitors to Beartown Lakes Reservation in Auburn and Bainbridge townships can expect to encounter a re-paving project at the park from May 3 through 9. However, because asphalt is very much weather dependent, that schedule is subject to change.
Geauga Park District Director of Operations John Oros said the paving will look similar to a paving project on a township or county road, and although there will be some closures to entrances or areas of the park as needed, the contractor will work to maintain traffic flow in and out of the park.
Due to minimal noise and the smell of asphalt, neighbors are also being notified by postcard.
Geocache Day
Even though Geauga Park District has been posting new geocache coordinates in each of its quarterly newsletters, participants have been clamoring for more. The new fair weather ushers in the second Geocache Day of the year, this time taking participants to four more parks in a single day of treasure hunt fun.
Geocache Day: Spring will take place May 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Big Creek Park, 9160 Robinson Road in Chardon Township.
Geocaching is an up-and-coming challenge activity that gets people outside using their GPS to help locate hidden caches. Seasonal Geocache Days will provide even more fun and practice with a GPS, as well as the opportunity to explore even more parks.
Upon registration – required by phone at 440-279-0894 – participants will be assigned a playing card that they’ll need to retrieve from each of the caches. The quest can begin any time during posted hours, but must end at Big Creek Park between 1-4 p.m.
A complete set of instructions will be posted beginning April 27 on the park district’s website.
Incredible Backyard Edibles
Learn from Chef Kimberly McCune how to harvest, prep and enjoy backyard edibles.
Incredible Backyard Edibles is May 3 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Meyer Center at Big Creek Park, 9160 Robinson Road, Chardon Township.
Chef Kimberlys roots are planted deeply in the memory of her Geauga County childhood, where her parents established early, lasting and intertwining beliefs in the nature of food and community. Daughter of a beekeeper, she witnessed firsthand the interdependence of the land and its people when she visited the Amish farmers who leased beehives for orchard pollination.
As a student at Auburn Career Center, chef Kimberly was supported by the community with scholarship awards that allowed her to train in classical European cuisine at the CIA in Hyde Park, N.Y. Grateful for this and respectful of fresh local products, she has gained a pointed urgency to give something back. She now champions the Farmer to Restaurant and Pasture to Plate causes and is a strong supporter of independent restaurant operators everywhere.
A current contestant on the Food Networks Fat Chef, Chef Kimberly represents First Lady Michele Obamas Lets Move Initiative by serving as ambassador for the Chefs Move into Schools Program for Chagrin Falls Schools. Her Hungry Bee business specializes in catering, cooking classes and personal chef services. A new project, ReHive Ale, has also become a passion, which links her childhood beekeeping hobby to her growing business.
This program is intended for adults.
