CMS Hosts Finance Fair
Ohio State Extension Office and its community volunteers worked with eighth-grade students on the finance fair of “Real Money, Real World.” Students were randomly given a vocation with a yearly salary and a family size with the number of children and their children’s ages.
The day before the finance fair, staff met with the students to calculate federal tax, FICA, state and local taxes and other deductions that would be taken from the student’s monthly salary. The following day students met with community professionals and volunteers to “purchase” housing, food, transportation, insurance, clothing and a variety of other needs and wants.
Students came away from the day at the finance fair with a new understanding of the many decisions and the amount of effort it takes, as well as the amount of money, to make a household work. Most surprising to many students was the cost of raising children.
Students also came away with a new appreciation for the value of a good education, the difference between needing an item and wanting it, the value of saving money and the perils of debt. A new appreciation for all their parents do for them in the “real world” was gained and many went home to thank their parents for all they do on their behalf.

STEM Club at Observatory Park
Cardinal Middle School STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students scaled the corners of the pyramids and stood on the asteroids as they enjoyed an afternoon at Observatory Park in Montville.
Students safely observed sunspots and built a scale model of the solar system. Other activities included a lesson on magnification using telescopes, hand glasses and binoculars and a “What’s in the sky tonight” planetarium show.
Students walked the planet walk and learned about each planet along the way. Mr. and Mrs. Boles are volunteer advisors for the sixth, seventh and eighth-grade club. Cardinal Middle School PTSA graciously supports the transportation and other materials for STEM students.
