Coop’s Deli & Gyros might be under new ownership as of Aug. 1, but some things are staying the same.

Macedonia resident Bill Muscatello purchased the business, located at 12797 Mayfield Road, Chardon, from previous owner Sharon Humphreys — keeping the business name (Coop is the name of Humphreys’ father) and adding some additional menu items.

“Sharon has helped with the transition, she’s been awesome through the entire process,” Muscatello explained. “They’ve been so helpful, it’s been great.”

After seeing the opportunity to purchase the business, Muscatello was fully-engaged from the start.

The father of two children — Billy, an eighth-grader at Nordonia Middle School, and Maria, a freshman at Marymount of Manhattan in New York — Muscatello said all profits made are going to help fund his daughter’s college education.

His “baby?” A Bernese Mountain dog, named Jackson.

“The 35-minute drive here from Macedonia isn’t bad — it’s a nice half hour drive where I organize my thoughts and listen to music although I may be sleeping here during Lake Effect,” Muscatello said, laughing. “There are good people here. I’ve met all the neighbors and the locals, everyone is genuine.”

His wife, Nancy, occasionally helps out at the deli, both still learning to perfect the Coop’s fan-favorites: steak subs, reubens and gyros.

A prospective employee is a student at a local culinary school, and her talents will be used to assist in the “deliciousness” of the food.

“We’re still trying to get a steady system in place, as far as food buying and quantities are concerned,” Muscatello explained.

Menu items including gyros, salads, subs, sandwiches and soups will be on the menu in the fall. A variety of chips, cookies, desserts and beverages are also available.

The regular customers seem to be happy with the new ownership, and new customers are also starting to pour in, Muscatello said.

“We take care of our customers. You give, you get back — I want to work with the local communities as best as I can,” he added.

The business hosts concession stands for Kenston Community Education programs, and is currently working on a coupon for ticket stubs at Berkshire Schools. Halloween candy giveaway, a fall fest and lunch with Santa are also planned for the year.

The deli storefront faces Aquilla Road. Extended hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday, begin after Labor Day. Call Coops, 440-279-4555, for daily specials or more information.
