Second-Grade Leaf Detectives

St. Mary School second-graders became leaf detectives during a field trip to the Holden Arboretum last week. The field trip was a part of a yearlong partnership with the Arboretum called “Growing Students in Science.”

The students collected leaf samples and investigated different types of trees that originate in the area.

Teacher Donna Henry said, “The hands-on learning really supports and reinforces the school science curriculum, and allows students to experience this great local resource we have in the Arboretum.”

The visit emphasized the interaction between people, trees and the environment.

“We used ping pong balls on a string to see which way the wind was blowing,” said student Elaina Mardula.

Staff from the Arboretum will visit St. Mary School in the winter and the students will return to the Arboretum in the spring for further investigation.
