CF Artists Receive Honors
Students from Chagrin Falls middle and high schools received many awards from The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers’ annual Scholastic Art & Writings competition.
They were honored at an awards ceremony and reception at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Jan. 10.
Their artwork will be displayed in the museum’s exhibit, open to the public, through the end of January.
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
The awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.
The awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 regional affiliates across the country to bring the program to local communities. Teens in grades seven through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. A panel of local professional artists and art educators jury the exhibit and selected the awarded pieces from nearly 1,700 entries.

Forefront of School Nutrition
In an effort to arm students and parents with more knowledge about the foods being served in its schools, Chagrin Falls Schools is teaming up with Nutrislice to launch a new school lunch app and menu program.
Accessible on the smartphone app or via the “Lunch Menus” tabs on the district and individual building websites, Nutrislice shows nutrition information for and descriptions of each day’s menu choices.
Nutrislice also makes finding common allergens for daily menu choices simple.
District Food Service Supervisor Marti Jacobson, MS, RD, LD, highlights the benefits of Nutrislice saying.
“It is important for students to learn how to make choices, both at school and at home, that lead to an overall balanced diet. As a registered dietitian, I would like for students to know that it is ok to eat a less nutritious food once in a while as long as they balance it out by eating healthier foods most of the time,” Jacobson said. “Nutrislice gives students the tools they need to learn how to make these choices. Having the ability to see the nutrition information for our menu items enables students and parents, together, to make informed decisions.”
She added, “Nutrislice allows students with allergies and their parents to view the allergen information for our lunches making them feel more comfortable about purchasing food from the school cafeteria.”
Chagrin Falls joins school districts all over the country who use School Lunch by Nutrislice’s app and menu program. The app is offered for free on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
CFHS Tigers of the Semester
The Tigers of the Semester Award is presented to students who exemplify a positive attitude, work ethic, achievement in the classroom and service to fellow students and teachers at Chagrin Falls High School.
Teachers nominate one student from their classes that impressed them with their achievement, attitude, hard work, willingness to help others and growth during the first half of the year.
First semester Tigers were honored on Jan. 13. The event was sponsored by Key Club and advisors Care Walter, Karen Kropinak, and Bill Kline organized the event, read nominations and gave students awards during the recognition.
