Stephanie McCormack is completing AP Computer Science A and currently learning advanced data structures. She has completed a variety of coding projects.

“I aspire to continue my computer science career at a collegiate level and potentially create my own study interacting my two favorite subjects, computer science and psychology,” said McCormack.

Abigail (Abby) Meil discovered coding as a tenth grader. She is especially proud of her coding of games like Tetris, Pac-Man and Blokus, as well as many others.

“I enjoy anything where I can type rather than write,” said Meil.

Gurney Spirit Week

Gurney Elementary celebrated Spirit Week during the week of Jan. 26. Students showed Tiger spirit to gear up for the high school’s winter formal and girls basketball game on Jan. 31.

To kick off the event, students participated in Mustache Day on Jan. 26. For Tuesday, the kids wore sporting apparel for Jersey Day. On Wednesday, students dressed in their best rugged attire for Western Wear Day. Fitting for the cold weather of the season, the kids wore their fluffiest, most decorative socks for Silly Sock Days on Thursday.

Orange and Black Day held on Friday was “by far their favorite day,” said Rachel Gebler, kindergarten teacher at Gurney. Showing their Chagrin pride, staff and students in kindergarten through third grade wore orange and black to gain some spirit for the pep rally. High School Girl’s Varsity basketball team visited Gurney on Friday for a Pep Rally to prepare for their game on Saturday, Jan. 31. Before the girls’ arrival, students had fun making banners to cheer on the team for their big game. Showing off their best basketball skills, the team shot some hoops before the cheering crowd; “they were all standing up in the gym cheering them on,” said Gebler.

Mr. Bachofsky’s Tiger Beats performed the National Anthem at Gurney Night during girls basketball game on Saturday. The girls defeated Orange High School on their home turf at Quesinberry Gymnasium, winning 43 to 24.

Thanks to the teachers who coordinated the events, a great amount of school pride was instilled in the Gurney Elementary students through a wonderful, activity-filled Spirit Week.
