National Merit Finalists
The National Merit Scholarship Program has determined which of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2014 have met all requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition.
Chagrin Falls High School seniors John Karyo and Andrew Moran have both been named as finalists.
All finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2015.
The selection of some 8,000 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 finalists is in progress. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will begin mailing scholarship offers to winners in March. The announcements of Merit Scholar designees will be made by NMSC in April, May and July.
Local Dentist Visits Gurney
Local Chagrin Falls dentist Dr. Coreno visited Gurney Elementary School on Feb. 26 and presented an engaging Dental Health Month presentation to the third grade.
Dr. Coreno has been working with the Chagrin Falls Athletic Department for several years providing professional grade athletic mouthpieces through his office’s Project Protect program.
He stressed the importance of dental health and allowed the kids to touch various dental tools and animal teeth. The third graders were able to see their own interesting dental work as Dr. Coreno used a camera to project a picture of the kids’ mouths and teeth on the whiteboard. Each student received a free toothbrush and instructions on how to properly maintain healthy teeth.
Try Hockey for Free
The Chagrin Falls Hockey Team volunteered at the Try Hockey for Free event held at The Pond on Feb. 21. The event was one of 300 being held across the country in celebration of Kraft’s Hockey Across America Weekend.
The event brought together 52 children ages 4-9 years old to try the greatest game on ice. In the past two years, the event has been able to reach out to more than 200 local kids and give them the chance to try hockey.
Support from The Pond staff, local high school athletes, Geauga Youth Hockey Association and Lake Erie Monsters made the event possible.
