AGPA Rubber Band Contest
Wind chimes, mailboxes and artwork line the walls of the junior high science lab at school. What they all have in common is that at least one rubber band is incorporated into their design.
The Akron Global Polymer Academy (AGPA) of the University of Akron challenged local junior high students to design and create a working invention that incorporated at least one rubber band in their seventh annual Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors. Students were given the choice of competing in two separate divisions: arts and leisure or science and engineering.
The first place winner in each division will receive $1,000 and the remaining finalists will receive $50. The top four schools with the most student entries will also receive a $250 donation.
Students were required to not only submit their invention, but also an essay describing its purpose, how it works and who can benefit. Seventh-grader Edward Buzogany created a cup holder for use on boats and demonstrated its hold by displaying it upside down. Katie Suszynski entered her creation into the arts category hoping to “Inspire” others.
Students may be chosen to move on to further levels of competition in May. Good luck to all those who entered.
