First-Grade Science Experiment
What better way to learn about science properties than to see them in action, which is exactly what first-graders at Jordak Elementary School did on March 24. After learning about force and motion in science class, students took to the gymnasium to conduct experiments on the two properties. With a little help from school consultant Claire Zurbuch, students used golf balls, ramps and gravity to conduct their experiments and see the concepts of force and motion in action.
Gilbert The Bulldog Visits
Gilbert, a 13-week-old English bulldog, visited classrooms at Jordak Elementary School and Cardinal Intermediate School March 30 and 31 and April 1. Students in kindergarten through third-grade took turns reading stories to Gilbert when he visited.
“Research shows that students will work harder to improve their reading skills if they read to an animal,” says Jordak Elementary Principal Kelly Bearer. “We were thrilled that Gilbert’s owner allowed him to visit our students and give them an opportunity to work on their reading.”
Gilbert seemed to enjoy the stories, snuggling up to the students, listening intently and occasionally falling asleep on the carpet as the students read to him.

Tdap Requirement
The Ohio Department of Health requires that a dose of Tdap be administered before a student enters the seventh grade. The dose is intended to be administered as a booster dose for students who have completed the required doses of the initial series of DTaP/DT/Td. Therefore, current sixth-graders will need to show proof of having received this booster dose before they can return to school in the fall.
Tdap vaccine is available from the doctor, clinic or healthcare provider. All county health departments also provide Tdap vaccines.
If one chooses not to have his or her child vaccinated, please request a waiver form from the school office. If one’s child has already received the Tdap booster vaccine please make sure supporting documentation has been sent in.
