Spring Sports Awards
Cardinal High School held its annual spring sports banquet on May 28, where several student athletes were recognized for their efforts on the field and in the classroom. The awards and their recipients include:
OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award: Kaitlin B. and Ian M.
The National Federation of High School’s National Award of Excellence: Jessica K. and K.C. C.
The OHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete Award: Joe T. and Cheyenne P.
The OHSAA’s State Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity is presented each year to a person within the school or community who is a positive role model for others and who has contributed to the well-being of the youth of Cardinal High School. This year, the state award was presented to Ric Weirick.
Weirick has volunteered to help with the football team for games for many years. He assists with equipment on the sidelines. In addition, he and his family have prepared a brown bag lunch for the players and coaches after road games.
Each year, Cardinal coaches vote for both the Male and Female Senior Athlete Award. These are the most prestigious awards presented by the Cardinal Athletic Department.
The John Smallwood Award, given to the top senior male athlete, was presented to Logan S. and the Jo Harris Award, given to the top senior female athlete, was presented to Cheyenne P.
Athletes Show Huskie Pride
A huge Huskie “thank you” goes to Cardinal high and middle school athletes who have volunteered to spread mulch at area homes as part of the Cardinal Athletic Department’s Mulch Sale Fundraiser.
On June 5, football players Matt C., Noah F., Bryn H., Garrett H., Trey H., Cam K., Braydon N., Crossland R., Trey S., Kyle S. and It’saiah T. spent five hours spreading mulch and that was after participating in the football team’s strength testing lift-a-thon.
Epic Basketball Game
A select group of Cardinal Middle School eighth-graders participated in an epic basketball showdown with their teachers on the last day of school May 29. Though it took a little while for the students to get some points on the board, coach Sharon Casavecchia helped them make adjustments and eventually the team closed the point gap with the teachers. Student’s efforts fell just short though, posting a final score of “30-something to 40-something.”
Cardinaires Car Washes
The Cardinal High School Cardinaires will be holding car washes this summer as a way to raise money to help offset various costs incurred during the year.
The final two car washes of the summer will be held June 27 and July 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ACE Hardware.
