All About Trees
Second-graders in Mrs. Misinec’s class are learning about the environment and trees. Recently, a representative from Geauga-Trumbull Waste Management visited class to discuss the importance of trees. Students were read a book and then they played a game where they had to find and link in order the six elements needed – soil, seeds, water, space, air and sun – for trees to grow. Once students completed the game, they “grew” trees on paper by placing stickers in the appropriate places.
Career Awareness Day
Eighth-grade students got a little taste of the working world on Oct. 22 when they participated in Career Awareness Day. Students visited Dillen Products, Hexpol and the Middlefield fire and police departments.
Students toured various departments, were shown several demonstrations and given the opportunity to participate in some of the job duties, like running the speed radar for MPD.
Career Awareness Day was sponsored by the Geauga Growth Partnership as a way for students to get a better understanding of the career opportunities available to them locally.
Kissing Cows for Good Causes
During Spirit Week Oct. 26-30, students in both the middle and high schools were able to donate $1 towards picking which teacher they’d most like to see kiss a cow. The teachers with the most money donated to their names were the ones selected to pucker up.
At the middle school, teachers Dave Bronson, Meg Cameron, Daniel Cappelucci, Greg Cicero and Elisabeth Robinson were selected and at the high school, teachers Kathryn Miller and Joel Kithcart, guidance counselor Jill DeRamo, Assistant Principal Sherry Peters and Principal Jeremy Hunter were all chosen to kiss the cow.
All of the money raised is going toward charitable causes. Middle school funds will be used for their contributions to the Giving Tree, and the high school donated their money to WomenSafe, a not-for-profit domestic violence shelter and resource center.
“Along with being a lot of fun, this event also encouraged all students to be ‘INVOLVED,'” says eighth-grade teacher Elisabeth Robinson. “Being involved in school and in the community is one of the positive, PRIDE behaviors we’re encouraging our students to participate in.”
Halloween Tricks and Treats
Students at Jordak Elementary School and Cardinal Intermediate School enjoyed a day full of tricks and treats during classes on Oct. 30. Along with a costume parade to Briar Hill, students also enjoyed grade level activities. Second-graders participated in a volleyball game, relay races and a spider web counting game. They also stuck their hands in closed off buckets to feel various Halloween items.
“We had about eight stations set up for our second-graders and they got to spend about 15-20 minutes at each one,” says teacher Sharron Callahan. “It was something new we tried this year. The teachers had fun planning and we know the students enjoyed the games we even snuck a little bit of learning in there, too.”
