Airman Skypes Students

Airman Brittany Misterka Skyped with students at Cardinal Intermediate School from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida to talk to them about her job in the Air Force and show them pictures. The call was part of a special Veterans Day assembly at the school.

Airman Misterka also read a story and then recited the Pledge of Allegiance with everyone in attendance.

“It was beautiful and in unison, students were so excited,” says Principal Kelly Bearer.

During the call, Airman Misterka got to see her mom, a Cardinal employee, and her grandparents (her grandfather is a veteran), who were also in attendance.

Students Take on Knitting

Seventh-graders are learning to knit in Mrs. Casavecchia’s study assist time, thanks to a generous donation from the NeedleArts Mentoring Program through The National NeedleArts Association. Studies show that knitting and partici-pating in knitting groups can actually benefit students in an academic setting. The activity can apparently help foster key habits such as persistence, concentration and collaboration, and help develop fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination and math and language skills.

“All of these skills are essential when it comes to success in academics and in careers,” says Sharon Casavecchia. “Believe it or not, some of these studies have indicated that the consistent and constant repetition of the motions and the patterning helps develop math and language skills and increases memory and concentration not to mention it gives students such a confidence boost when they finish the project!”

Students taking advantage of this activity during study assist say they’re enjoying their new hobby and find it to be relaxing.

“I love to knit during study assist because it keeps me concentrated and gives me a goal to get my work done so I can do something I like,” says Chauna L.

Academic Achievement

Students at Cardinal Intermediate School were once again recognized for their achievements in the classroom during the first grading period. Students attended a special ceremony in the gym where they received certificates for Straight A’s, Honor Roll, Merit Roll, Related Arts, Huskie Pride, Summer Reading, Kiwanis, Accelerated Reading and Grade Level achievements. The rallies are an excellent way to involve students in positive behaviors as well as provide motivation for students to continue their hard work into the next grading period.

Let’s Talk! Launched

The Cardinal School District is pleased to announce the implementation of the Let’s Talk! communication tool, which will allow the district to better listen to what the Cardinal community has to say. In addition, the Let’s Talk! tool will allow the community to provide the diistrict with feedback and commentary. The community’s questions, comments, concerns and feedback are important to Cardinal, so the district hopes everyone will take some time to view the tool and engage.

Let’s Talk! can be found on the District page of www.cardinalschools.org.
