Happy Holidays
Kenston Schools will be closed for the winter break beginning Dec. 21. Classes resume for students on Jan. 5.
Hall of Fame Conference Performance
The Kenston High School Symphonic Band conducted by Mr. Jeff Link was one of only three bands in the state invited to perform at the Ohio Band Directors Band Conference. The annual conference focuses on secondary music education with the University of Akron/School of Music sponsoring guest conductor James Curnow.
Kenston High School offers its students the option of participating in marching and concert bands that occur outside of the normal school day during the first semester. During the second semester, the concert bands split one of the blocks/periods. The Kenston Symphonic Band (OMEA class A) and the Kenston Concert Winds (OMEA class C) consistently receive superior and excellent ratings at OMEA adjudicated events.
Over 400 students are in the Kenston band program, with 123 students participating at the high school level. Extracurricular options for Kenston band students consist of seventh-grade jazz band, eighth-grade jazz band, two high school jazz bands, flute choir, brass quintet and pit orchestra. Students are encouraged to participate in OMEA solo and ensemble and honor band events at both the middle school and high school levels.
Speech and Debate
The Speech and Debate team competed at the Mentor Tournament. Nick Vitello placed first in Humorous Interpretation earning a bid to the state tournament.
In Original Oratory, Bella Puckett earned second place honors and a bid to the state contest. Megan Herbruck and Savannah Georgian finished fifth in Dou Interpretation.
Students need four bids to automatically qualify for the state tournament in March.
KHS Speech and Debate will present its second annual Kenston Speech and Debate Tournament on Dec. 19. More than 300 excited participants from at least 20 schools are expected to attend.
Students will be competing at both the high school and middle school in individual events, including Humorous Interpretation, US Extemporaneous Speaking and Declamation, and in partner events, such as Duo Interpretation, Lincoln Douglas Debate and 2-Person Policy Debate.
