Help a Family

The Little Porkers 4-H group is collecting nonperishable food items to help a deserving local family this holiday season. There is a collection container inside the lobby of the Hambden Township Hall. Feel free to drop off donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays before Christmas. The community’s help with this project will be greatly appreciated.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Once again the question arises, what to do with the tree after Christmas? The township will be helping with that again this season by providing a dumpster at the township park from about Dec. 26 through mid-January.

Even though a grant for tree recycling is no longer available, the township wants to continue to provide this service to its residents. Universal Disposal has given Hambden a very reasonable rate for the dumpster and its removal.

No one will be able to assist residents with putting their trees in the dumpster; please do not leave them on the ground. Thank you.

Welcome, Phil Smith

Phil is the newest member of Hamb-den Township Zoning Commission. He will serve as an alternate on the commission beginning this month.

Phil and his family have been Hambden residents for about eight years. He is owner of FirstLight Home Care of NE Ohio, a business located in Chardon.

Phil brings an engineering background and experience in construction to the commission. Trustees are sure he will be a valuable addition to the zoning commission.

Zoning Update

Zoning Inspector Darlene Welch wants everyone to know that over the summer, residents were having a problem with persistent salesmen, or transient vendors, approaching their homes. These vendors indicated that they had obtained a zoning certificate to allow them to sell door to door. This was completely false. This activity is not regulated by a zoning certificate of any kind.

Because the township was contacted for assistance with this problem, on Nov. 18 during a public meeting, township trustees passed a resolution to prohibit transient vendors in the community pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code 505.94. This does not apply to any person invited by the resident to sell, offer for sale or solicit orders for the delivery of goods or any person who represents any entity exempted from taxation. It also does not include an auction or an auctioneer company licensed by the State of Ohio.

The Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Geauga County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office have been notified of the passage of this resolution so if a resident is approached by an unwanted salesperson, he or she has the right to contact the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and advise them of this situation.

From the Fire Chief

Fire Chief Scott Hildenbrand wants to thank Hambden voters for their continued support of the fire department and passage for the fire levy renewal. Christmas tree sales were fantastic and they were sold out by Dec. 14. Support of the department fundraisers makes such a difference. Fundraisers this year included the Mother’s Day rib dinner and two clam bakes as well as selling hamburgers and hot dogs at the community picnic.

Hildenbrand wants to remind

residents to have their chimneys cleaned and inspected before using them this winter. Please make sure Christmas lights are hooked up safely as well. Make sure extension cords are rated for the amount of lights one is using. All outside cords need to be rated for exterior use and have a three-prong plug. Hambden’s firefighters are there for residents in case of any emergency, just dial 911. They want everyone to be safe though and hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

Please remember that when it finally does snow, slow down a little on the roadways.

Holiday Wishes

Merry Christmas and happy New Year to everyone.
