Cleveland Clinic eXpressions
Winning 10 awards, NDCL students made a strong showing in the 2016 Cleveland Clinic eXpressions contest. The annual program received 1,600 entries in three categories — art, language and math. In total, 84 awards were given.
NDCL recognizes its students’ achievement in the following categories:
In art, seniors Joseph Canter and David Kozan received blue ribbon awards and freshman Kayla Powell received a red ribbon award
In math, seniors Paul Dubois and Alexis Zuhranec each received a red ribbon, and juniors Lean Walsh and Kayla Martin earned honorable mention.
In language, a blue ribbon was awarded to junior Hailey Oppenlander, a white ribbon to sophomore McKenna Reiss and a red ribbon to freshman Kayla Powell.
Launched in 2005, eXpressions is an award-winning educational initiative that utilizes creative expression to engage high school students in the exploration of science and medicine. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning, students translate research studies conducted by Cleveland Clinic high school interns, producing artistic, literary and mathematical interpretations of the science. Ultimately, it provides participants with a deeper appreciation for science and its connections to other disciplines.
On Jan. 28, all winners are invited to participate in a program and reception sponsored by Cleveland Clinic.
Alumnus Receives Merit Scholarship
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin graduate Domenic Misiti ’15 has received the Giargiari Medical Scholarship from the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF). Misiti attends the University of Notre Dame and is pursuing a degree in pre-medicine.
“Since 1975, NIAF has awarded millions of dollars in merit-based scholarships and cultural grants to undergraduate, graduate, post graduate, medical and law students from across the country. NIAF values the importance of education and the role it plays in helping deserving Italian American students build promising futures,” said Anita Bevacqua McBride, co-chair of the Foundation’s Education and Grants Committee.
Scholarship applicants must be a NIAF member or have a parent or guardian who is a member of the Foundation. Students must be of Italian descent, with at least one ancestor who has emigrated from Italy. NIAF scholarship recipients are selected based on academic merit and have an average GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 to apply.
Food Pantry Donations
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin students wrapped up another successful food drive and are providing gifts of food to local food pantries. The Campus Cares effort was coordinated with the Geauga County Hunger Task Force to provide food to their agencies across the county.
By collecting food Dec. 15-18, the school was able to help to five of the eight pantries restock their shelves in early January — a time when donations often fall off. The four-day drive was organized by seniors Kayleigh Cook and Sarah Zakrajsek as their Christian Leadership class “Above and Beyond Project.”
