BOE Welcomes New Members

The Cardinal Local School District has officially welcomed two new members to the board of education: Greg McClain and Linda Smallwood. McClain was elected in November and took oath at the board’s organizational meeting on Jan. 4. Smallwood was appointed to fill a vacated seat and she took her oath at the Jan. 13 regular meeting. McClain and Smallwood join Ken Klima, president; Wendy Anderson, vice president; and Katie Thomas.

Students Receive Forensics Grant

A group of Cardinal High School students has secured a $700 grant through DonorsChoose.org to be used to purchase fingerprinting and DNA analysis kits for a future forensic science class. According to high school science teacher Rebecca Falin, this group of students expressed interest in having a forensics class next year, but lack the materials to have a beneficial educational experience.

Dr. Falin told the students about a new funding initiative for student-led projects through DonorsChoose.org and they immediately volunteered to work together to create and submit a proposal for funding. The proposal was submitted on Nov. 20 and by Dec. 22, the project was completely funded through 11 donations, some of which came from as far away as California and another from ExxonMobil and Think It Up Supporters.

“Creating this grant proposal was a collaborative effort of a group of my students and myself,” says Dr. Falin. “The kids really wanted to have the option of a forensic science course, but funding the materials to support new classes is so challenging. This didn’t deter them, however, and they worked together to determine what the most important course activities would be and the materials that would be needed. This was the most engaged in a project that I have seen them all year. They took ownership of it and followed through to the end.”

Students involved in securing the grant were: Taylor H. (leader), Raven G., Nicole B., Kathleen M., Ashley B., Amanda K. and Shane D.

CHS Students of the Month

Congratulations to the CHS December Students of the Month: Haley A. and Anne R.

Haley’s nominating teacher says she is involved in everything from sports to community groups to tutoring, yet, she still finds time to help with so many aspects at CHS.

Anne’s nominating teacher says she is extremely hard working, independent and takes initiative. She also makes it a point to help peers and be respectful.

Congratulations ladies and keep up the great Huskie pride.

Spelling Bee Champion

On Jan. 8, Cardinal Schools crowned seventh-grader Halle D. as the district spelling bee champion. After several back and forth rounds with runner-up Ashley M., Halle finally pulled off the spelling victory in the 11th round after correctly spelling the word “mentality.” Ashley’s mom says the pair studied hard over the winter break, saying and spelling the words on the list constantly. Halle will go on to represent Cardinal in the county spelling bee on Feb. 18. Seventh-graders Ashley M. and Aaron E. came in second and third place, respectively. In all, 24 students in grades 3-8 participated in the event that was coordinated by teachers Mrs. Cameron and Miss McKnight.
