Hambden Native to Run Iditarod

Former Hambden resident Miriam Osredkar found her calling about 10 years ago when she began dogsledding. She found she loved the outdoors, especially the beauty of Alaska, and working with dogs and nature became her future.

Miriam grew up in Hambden and graduated from Chardon High in 1995. She is the daughter of Patty and Tony Osredkar.

This year, Miriam has the opportunity to participate in the 2016 Iditarod. Adventures like that, however, come with a large price tag. Miriam is seeking donations to help offset the over $11,000 cost of participating.

Anyone interested in helping can go to Miriam’s Iditarod Race2016@gofundme.com and read more about Miriam and her dogs and make a donation Best of luck Miriam.

Valentine Pancakes at the Grange

On Feb. 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Hambden Grange will be having an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Grange, 9778 Old State Road. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, corn fritters, maple syrup, fruit, juice, cocoa and coffee.

The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. The Grange serves a great breakfast and is a good way to catch up with friends and neighbors. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Goodbye, Hambden

It’s always hard to leave a place you truly love; I’ve been lucky enough to live in Hambden Township for nearly 40 years. Boy, does that make me old. I think we have one of the very best communities in Geauga County and anyone who has the opportunity to live here is very blessed.

For the past 24 years, I’ve been honored to be a part of our township government, first as your township clerk (fiscal officer) for nearly 10 years and for the past 14 years, as one of your township trustees. This is one of the most rewarding jobs I could have ever done because it gave me the opportunity, in some small way, to try to help make our township such a great place to live. I’ve worked with wonderful people and we’ve all worked together for the same purpose.

I guess the time comes when things need to change, though. My husband Mike retired at the end of 2015 after 26 years as facilities manager for Geauga County Public Library. This month, I will also be retiring and we will be moving from Hambden to a smaller home. I know we’re going to enjoy our new home and our retirement, but I’m definitely going to miss Hambden.

Hopefully, whoever replaces me will continue to update our residents with this article and our township newsletter, but for me it’s time to say goodbye.
