‘Because I Said I Would’ Founder Visits

Cardinal middle and high school students had a phenomenal guest speaker visit their buildings on Jan. 20, 2016. Alex Sheen, founder of the non-profit group “because I said I would,” spoke to students about the importance of making and keeping a promise. Sheen also gave out promise cards to students and staff to write their promises down – he says it’s a way to hold people accountable to their commitments.

Students at Cardinal Middle School have already started a “promise board” where they write their promises and then post them as a way to remind themselves about the things they said they would do.

Warming Tree for Students in Need

Jordak Elementary School physical education teacher Sara Brodnan has created the Warming Tree at the school. The tree holds new or gently used, donated hats, scarves, gloves and socks for students to take if they need something to stay warm during the cold months.

Mrs. Brodnan says, “in order for students to have the best school day possible, it is important to meet their basic needs first, from having full tummies to staying warm in the cold. Students should not have to worry about being cold while at recess or before or after school, which, is why I wanted to start the Warming Tree.”

JES Principal Kelly Bearer says the tree is a welcome addition to the school office.

“We always have students who don’t have warm things to wear – they lost them, forgot them or something else happened to them,” Bearer explains. “Mrs. Brodnan came up with the idea, cut down the branches from her property and brought it into the office. I feel very strongly about the pups going outside for recess each day; it’s just better for academics and health, but they need to be warm, so this certainly helps with that. Besides, it’s cool and the pups love it.’

Jump Rope for Heart

Students at Jordak and Cardinal Intermediate schools in Middlefield are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, the nation’s number one and number four killers. During the month of February, Jordak and CIS will host their annual Jump Rope For Heart event to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth.

Jump Rope For Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. The need to educate children about the importance of physical activity couldn’t be timelier. According to recent studies, about one-third of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight and obese.

“By including physical activity into their daily routines, kids can significantly reduce the onset and burden of heart disease,” said Valerie Smith with the American Heart Association. “By raising money through Jump Rope For Heart, we are preventing heart disease and obesity for the next generation of Americans. Kids are literally jumping into a heart healthier life while becoming passionate about raising money for other kids with sick hearts.”

For 36 years, millions of students have jumped rope and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Jump Rope For Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators.

Please help the students help others by making a donation. Donations can be made through Cardinal students or through a Jordak or intermediate school representative. To help more, call the nearest American Heart Association office at 216-791-7500 or visit us online at heart.org/jump.
