Project Based Learning Project

Cardinal High School is excited to announce the start of a new partnership with Great Lakes Growers to conduct a project-based learning (PBL) project. Students in the honors biology class will visit the Great Lakes Growers greenhouse on Kinsman Road twice a week to conduct research on various growing methods. The research will help employees develop new strategies and growth techniques for producing products more effectively and efficiently.

“We are constantly running trials on new ways to grow plants using LED lighting, temperature variations and water variances,” says Great Lakes Growers owner John Bonner. “Growing plants takes a lot of work; we’re running our regular growing business too, so it will be great to have 27 sets of extra hands to help out with the research trials.”

Students will be collecting data on things like weight and color of plants as well as taking photo evidence in three different growing trials: growing using LED lights with ambient light, growing using LED lights without ambient light and growing using strictly organic methods. Students will have access to the greenhouse’s brand new research lab to conduct their trials.

The partnership came about after a conversation between Bonner and high school Principal Jeremy Hunter both Cardinal alumni.

“When John started telling me about the automated technology that they’ve integrated into the greenhouse and the work they wanted to do with their growing trials, I immediately thought about the learning potential that could bring for our students,” says Hunter. “Within a month, we had a plan and a curriculum in place and we are thrilled to be able to bring this hands-on, project-based learning opportunity to our students.”

Bonner agrees, “This is the best way to learn, with hands on experience, and they’re going to learn a lot. This partnership is going to be a lot of fun.”

The Bonner family has owned greenhouses locally for decades. The current 60,000 square-foot state-of-the-art Great Lakes Growers’ greenhouse was funded, in part, through county loans. The facility is a hydroponic (using water) grower of lettuce and herbs that are distributed to retailers, restaurants and suppliers throughout the Great Lakes region in the United States and Canada.

Read Quest Event

A total of 3,763,408 books were read during a nationwide, one-day reading event called Read Quest. Third- and fourth-graders at Cardinal Intermediate School participated in the event, wearing pajamas and bringing blankets so they could be comfortable during the reading challenge.

The one-day reading event encourages students to read and share their discoveries. Students read books and notification articles and then completed quizzes on what they read. As the quizzes were submitted, a running total of books read was updated on the Read Quest website.

“Our students were thrilled to be participating in ReadQuest this year,” said third-grade teacher Melisa Cardinal. “The event helped our students gain valuable reading practice, build close reading skills and grow as readers.”

CHS Students of the Month

Congratulations to the Cardinal High School February Students of the Month: senior Breana N. and freshman Tanner H.

Breana’s nominating teacher says she’s hardworking, dependable, manages a job on top of being a student and demonstrates leadership skills in student council.

Tanner is the PBIS Student of the Month and his nominating teacher says he is extremely diligent in completing and turning in homework assignments, even when he misses school. He takes initiative, sets goals and is an active participant in class. Congratulations, Breana and Tanner – keep up the great work.
