COSI Chemistry Mystery
A chemistry mystery unfolded in the Jordak Elementary School gym back in February. The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) needed the students’ help to determine what kind of liquid was in a jar.
Students were super sleuths, using science and some tips from the COSI representative to figure out the mystery in no time. After solving the chemistry mystery, students had an opportunity to visit about a dozen experiment stations set up around the gym and they loved the hands-on science experience they experienced at each one.
The event would not have been possible without the dozens of parent and community volunteers that gave up their time to help set up and run the stations. The school cannot thank the volunteers enough for the time they gave to the students to make it a learning experience like no other.
Simms Skype
Students in Mrs. Simms second-grade class have been studying land forms and the state of Alaska, and students can’t talk about Alaska without talking about “The Last Great Race on Earth” the Iditarod.
On Feb. 23, students got to Skype with Iditarod musher and Chardon native Miriam Osredkar. Miriam, who lives in Willow, Alaska, spent much time talking to the students and answering their questions about her dogs and her race training. She also introduced the class to her dogs and showed them the sled she would be racing on during the Iditarod. The race started March 5 and the class was going to keep up with her progress during the race.
