The Learning Fair
What started as a beautiful rainforest drawing in art led to an entire project centered around toucans for the kindergarten class at St. Mary School. Inspired by the interest her students showed in creating drawings of toucans, kindergarten teacher Kara Passow took the opportunity to expand the topic into all areas of the curriculum.
Kindergarten students, with some help from parent volunteers, researched toucans on their iPads and collected facts to be shared with the class. They entered words under the headings – Have, Can, Are, Eat and Live – all pertaining to toucans. Facts were presented on the Activeboard for the students to brainstorm and choose from for their very own personalized writings.
Kindergartner Jason Sotkovsky said, “I liked finding the facts and putting them on my paper.”
Jason was able to share all his hard work with his family this week at St. Mary School Learning Fair.
The kindergarten class was not the only one with amazing projects to share. The Learning Fair hosted everything from invention convention and science fair projects to biomes and working model cars.
The Learning Fair brought together students in grades K-8 and their families to not only view projects the students have been working on, but also to read through the Young Author’s books created by grades K-5. It’s a long-standing tradition that each year the students author their own books, which are carefully bound and covered with their art, work and photos, making for life-long keepsakes. The students then share their books during the night and allow for teachers, friends and family to sign the inside covers.
The evening brought many visitors in to see and appreciate all the hard work the teachers and students have done so far this year. The students brought excitement to the evening as they shared their accomplishments with family and friends.
