Each year, the State Support Team Region 4, along with the Lake County Education Service Center and Geauga County Education Service Center, regionally hosts the R.A. Horn Outstanding Student Achievement (student with a disability) and Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Awards Program for Lake and Geauga counties. Both Ramirez and Hendl will be honored at the Walter/Horn Awards Outstanding Achievement Ceremony at Auburn Career Center on April 27.

The award is named in honor of Dr. Franklin B. Walter, former superintendent of public instruction, and Dr. Raymond A. Horn, former assistant superintendent of public instruction. Dr. Walter has over 50 years of experience as a teacher and administrator and developed the nation’s first statewide plan for children with disabilities. Recognized as a national leader in special education issues, Dr. Horn dedicated over 60 years to improving the quality of learning for students with disabilities.

Trustees Hold Meeting at Westwood

Continuing their lesson on local government, third-grade students at Westwood Elementary School participated in the Russell Township Trustee meeting. Students in Miss Mehra’s, Mrs. Speiser’s and Mr. Dolinsky’s classes assisted the township trustees.

Russell Township Trustee Justin Madden was a guest speaker at Westwood in February, and it was at his persistence to hold a trustee meeting at Westwood. In collaboration with Mr. Madden, Westwood Principal Denise Brewster and Mrs. Palmer, Russell trustee secretary, brought the real life learning experience to Westwood.

“We did an across curriculum activity by incorporating writing into the study of local government,” said Mr. Dolinsky.

All the students had to write persuasive letters. According to Mr. Dolinsky, the goal was to persuade the trustees of the perfect name for the Russell raccoon. The students had to use what they learned in local government as persuasive evidence.

The team chose one student from each class whose letters seemed the most convincing and they read their letters to the trustees. Gavin Clark in Miss Mehra’s class, Hunter Sigley in Mr. Dolinsky’s class and Alex Shaffer from Mrs. Speiser’s class read letters. Students named the Russell raccoon “Sheauga.”

The students also learned about local and federal tax dollars. They were surprised to learn that a portion of their parents’ tax dollars goes towards buying and maintaining the equipment used throughout the various departments. Equipment from the fire, police and road departments was brought to the school for the students to get an up-close look and for them to truly understand the importance of these functions.

The Russell trustees and department employees did a fantastic job to make this a great life-long learning experience for the students.

Mr. Dolinsky commented, “Our students really look up to them as role models.”

Lunch with a Loved One

Westwood Elementary School second-grade students recently enjoyed their lunch with a special loved one. After lunch, students and their loved ones had the opportunity to peruse the school’s book fair.
