Distinguished Viking Honored

Each year the community of St. Mary School comes together to honor one of its own with the Distinguished Viking Award. The award was created to acknowledge an individual, family or organization that has enhanced and supported St. Mary School by giving generously of their time, talents or resources. The award recognizes the recipient’s leadership, compassion, thoughtfulness and energy dedicated to the school. Open nominations were collected from all people affiliated with the school.

This year’s winner Heidi Campany was honored at the PTU’s annual Viking Quest event held over the weekend at LaMalfa Party Center.

During the award presentation, Principal Mary Petelin said, “When I came on as new principal a few years ago, I remember seeing Heidi in the hallways often, but not with her children; so I asked who her students were. I was shocked when I found out she did not have current students enrolled at St. Mary. They had already graduated.”

In fact, parent Sonya Virant noted that Heidi continued to chair the annual PTU fundraiser after her girls had moved on to high school.

Virant said, “Her commitment to our annual fundraiser through her time and talents demonstrates her support of the school and a desire to see it thrive.”

Heidi’s business, Heidi Campany Photography, is known to create beautiful works of photographic art for the school’s auctions and throughout the year for various functions.

PTU president Chris Zemba said, “Heidi has been a volunteer for St. Mary School since her children entered kindergarten and has continued to give of her time to this day.”

Heidi accepted the award along with her husband and daughters in attendance – Lindsey, a senior at NDCL and Sydney, who is now at Kent State University.

Heidi said, “It takes a village to raise your children, and St. Mary School was the village that helped raise my girls.”
