Church in Country & City Meet
Last Friday, students and teachers from St. Francis School in Cleveland traveled to St Helen School in Newbury to spend the day with the student body during their annual Church in the Country and City visit. The day began with everyone joining together for morning Mass celebrated by Bishop Roger Gries, O.S.B. Following mass, students spent the afternoon eating lunch, playing games and getting to know each other.
Field Day
As the school year comes to a close, eighth-grade students organized St. Helen Field Day. It is a fun annual event in which the student body is divided into two teams and participates in numerous outdoor activities.
This year during art class, students and staff created their own tie-dyed shirts and were divided into warm and cool colored teams. In the end, the cool colored team was the winner for field day.
Distinguished Graduate Award
Each year St. Helen School looks for faith-filled, practicing Catholic graduates who are successful in their careers largely because of the excellent education they received at St. Helen School. Steve Kekedy and Kate Barcikoski were chosen to be this year’s St. Helen School Distinguished Graduates.
Steve was nominated by his grade school coach John Manfredi. John chose Steve for his years of volunteering and for resurrecting the St. Helen Unicycle Team.
Kate’s family nominated her for setting a good Catholic example and respecting all forms of life.
Honors Assembly
At the honors assembly held on May 31, 15 of the 26 graduates received the Pres-idential Award for Academic Achievement. The criteria for the award was an academic average of A from grade four through grade eight, as well as high achievement on the IOWA nationally-normed tests. A total of 21 students received academic honors.
Graduates also received $5,675 in scholarships at the assembly. Previously, Dane Berschig, Frank Martin, Garrett Sah, William Steigerwald and Nicholas Wozniak were each awarded $16,000 from NDCL.
