Estate Planning

Sept. 6, 10:30 a.m.

Financial advisor Steve Mrozek, of Edward Jones, will present “Script Your Family’s Future: Why You Need an Estate Plan” at Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive. Learn strategies on distributing assets to family members, caring for minor or special needs children and determining who will make medical or financial decisions if unable to make them oneself.

Following the presentation, Mrozek and attorney Amy L Papesh, of Elk & Elk, who specializes in probate, estate planning and guardianships, will be available to answer questions. To attend, call Christine at 440-279-2131 by Sept. 2.

Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP

Sept. 6, 1 p.m.

The Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP 4527 will meet for its annual hot dog and chips lunch at the Bainbridge Town Hall, 17826 Chillicothe Road. Cost is $3. Call Betty Scholz at 440-338-8321 for reservations.

Lunch will be followed by a brief meeting and information about club activities.

The last trip of the season is to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Oct. 26. Cost is $30, with a $20 casino bonus. The group will stop for breakfast on the way there but travel straight home on way back. Sign up at the travel table or call Skip Ference, 440-338-3607.

School supplies and food staples will be collected for the food pantry as well as donations of dog food, hot dogs, blankets and towels for the Geauga County Dog Shelter. Medicare 101

The introductory overview will provide valuable information to those new to Medicare or looking to help a family member or friend. Included topics are: Medicare parts A, B, C, D and Medicare supplements. Adam Van Boxel, of the Geauga Department on Aging and trained as an Ohio Senior Health Insurance Program counselor, will be providing objective information and updates.

The presentations will be held at Bainbridge Library on Sept. 7, from 6:30-8 p.m., 440-543-5611; and at the Chardon Library on Sept. 14, from 7-8:30 p.m., 440-285-7601.

Healthy Living for Brain & Body

Sept. 14, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Alzheimer’s Association, Cleveland Area Chapter, Sound Inspirations Music Therapy LLC, and Tridia Hospice will present Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body at the West Geauga Senior Center, 12646 West Geauga Plaza Unit 4, in Chester Township.

Science is now able to provide insights into how to optimize physical and cognitive health as seniors age. Join to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement. Lunch will be provided by Tridia Hospice.

Geauga Memory Cafe

Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to noon

The Geauga Memory Caf presents the Carnival of the Senses for those with dementia and their caregivers at Geauga County Department on Aging, 12555 Ravenwood Drive, Chardon. Both will be able to visit carnival booths to experience and learn more about various treatment modalities, such as aroma therapy, art therapy, pet therapy and music therapy.

The Geauga Memory Caf creates quarterly themed recreation and networking opportunities for individuals and their care partners. Space is limited. RSVP to Vicki at 440-279-2149 by Sept. 13.

September Lunch & Learn

Sept. 16, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Geauga seniors, 60 years of age and older, are invited to the Geauga County Department on Aging’s Lunch & Learn for September at Burton Health Care, 14095 East Center St. in Burton. Come out and enjoy a free lunch and speaker who will discuss “Dreams Fulfilled: Creating & Achieving Your Bucket List.”

This Lunch & Learn is the fourth installment in a six-part series that take place at various health care facilities around Geauga County.

Limited transportation to Burton is available from the Chardon Senior Center. To register, arrange transportation, or for more information on the series, call the Chagrin Falls Senior Center at 440-247-8510. Next month, the series will take place Oct. 21 at Brooks House.

Murder Mystery Dinner

Sept. 23, 4:30-8 p.m.

A murder mystery dinner by Floriano Productions will take place at the Chagrin Falls Senior Center, 7060 Woodland Ave in Bainbridge. Chagrin Falls’ Mary Goodgame will cater dinner at 5 p.m. Enjoy the cabaret styling’s of Paul Floriano throughout the evening. Prizes will be awarded to the teams who can correctly guess “whodunnit.”

Cost is $25 for Geauga County seniors and $30 for out-of-county guests. Geauga seniors have priority until Sept. 9. Deadline is Sept. 16, or until full. Mail a registration form and check made payable to: Geauga County Department on Aging, 12555 Ravenwood Drive, Chardon, OH 44024.

Russell Township Senior Trash Pickup

Sept. 21 and 22

In order to be placed on the cleanup list, one must first be registered with the Geauga County Department on Aging, be 60 years of age or older and live in Russell Township.

As a special service to senior residents, Russell Township and the Department on Aging will pick up refuse from the seniors who need assistance. Have items ready to be moved out the evening before the pickup. Do not leave items curbside.

No liquids, paints, antifreeze or motor oil, hazardous materials, plastic-coated wire, construction debris, rocks, yard waste, tree trunks or household garbage will be accepted.

Metal items, appliances, televisions and electronic equipment will be accepted. Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic and taped securely. Only 10 household items per home and the trash should be from the registered senior’s household only.

No tires will be picked up, as Russell will have a separate tire pickup in August. Smaller materials should be consolidated in strong boxes and kept dry (tarped) if possible.

Health Care Planning

Sept. 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Advance Directives Committee of Geauga County Bar Association and Hospice of the Western Reserve will host a free presentation at Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Chardon, for Geauga County seniors focusing on healthcare power of attorney, living will declarations and donor registration. Forms will be provided to those in attendance and the committee will work seniors to complete the documents.

There will be two more presentations. The first will be on Oct. 26 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge Public Library and the second will be Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Geauga Senior Center for those who cannot make the September date.
