Senior Flu Shots

The Geauga County Health Department will be holding flu vaccine clinics at the following Geauga County senior centers.

Middlefield Senior Center, Oct. 17, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call 440-632-0611 to register.

Chardon Senior Center, Oct. 19, 1-2:30 p.m., Call 440-279-2131 to register.

Call the Geauga County Health Department at 440-279-1950 for insurance coverage information. If no Insurance and paying by cash, cost is $40, or $60 for high dose flu vaccine.

Deadline for clinic registrations is Oct. 14 for the Middlefield clinic and Oct. 18 for the Chardon clinic.

Matter Of Balance Class

University Hospitals Geauga Medical Campus, Hospice of the Western Reserve and Geauga Department on Aging are leading Matter of Balance classes to Geauga seniors interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength and in preventing falls.

The classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 3 to Oct. 31, from 1-3 p.m. at the West Geauga Senior Center located in the West Geauga Plaza in Chester Township. Class does not meet Oct. 10.

Seniors will learn to manage concerns about falls as well as set realistic goals for staying active, learn how to stay safe at home, complete exercises to increase strength and balance and learn how to identify and control the fear of falling.

Young of Heart

Oct. 7, 11:30 a.m.

St. Anselm Young of Heart will meet at the parish center. Bring a brown bag lunch. Dessert and beverage will be provided.

The speaker will be Sylvia Wiggins, from the Chesterland Historical Society, who will talk about slavery and the underground railroad as it relates to stories of local residents’ involvement in helping slaves move through the area.

Reservations for the New Year’s Eve trip are now closed. However, if anyone is interested in the trip, call Nancy at 440-729-9684 to see if more spaces can be added. The trip includes a New Year’s Eve party and an overnight at the Das Dutch Village Inn in Columbiana, Ohio. The cost is $226 ($232 for non-members), which must be paid at signup.

Another trip is planned for March 8-18, 2017, for a Panama Canal cruise. The group will fly to Ft. Lauderdale and board the Coral Princess. Stops will be made in Aruba; Cartagena, Colombia; Gatun Lake and Colon in Panama; Limon, Costa Rica; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Fares start at $2,500 (depending on cabin choice) and include round trip airfare from Cleveland, cruise, transfers to/from ship, taxes, port charges, and government fees. An initial deposit of $520 plus trip insurance is required by Oct. 7 to secure the price and assign cabins, with final payment due by Nov. 18. For more information call Nancy at 440-729-9684.

October Lunch & Learn

Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Geauga seniors, 60 years of age and older, are invited to the Geauga County Department on Aging’s Lunch & Learn for October at Brooks House Assisted Living, 18144 Claridon Troy Road in Hiram. Come out and enjoy a free lunch and speaker who will discuss “Dreams Fulfilled: Creating & Achieving Your Bucket List.”

This Lunch & Learn is the fifth installment in a six-part series that take place at various health care facilities around Geauga County.

Limited transportation to Brooks House is available from the Chardon Senior Center. To register, arrange transportation, or for more information on the series, call the Chagrin Falls Senior Center at 440-247-8510. Next month, the series will take place Nov. 18 at Briar Hill.

Paranormal Series At Chagrin

Join one Thursday a month through December at the Chagrin Falls Senior Center for an hour-long program discussing the paranormal. Tricia Vidovic, community liaison at Tridia Hospice, will present a different topic each month. Come armed with personal stories of hauntings, ghost sightings and experiences.

Upcoming dates include: Oct. 27 — “Ghosts & Hauntings” and Dec. 22 — “Paranormal & the Unknown.” All sessions begin at 11 a.m.
