Many people wanted to know why school lunches are so different than they used to be. In December 2010, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) was signed into law, which marked the most comprehensive change to the school nutrition environment since the previous update in 1995. The update came in response to helping combat the epidemic of childhood obesity as well as childhood hunger. The updated meal requirements became effective July 1, 2012, and include daily whole grains along with daily/weekly fruit, vegetable and legume requirements.
