Learning Through Service
Mrs. Rodriguez’s fifth-grade class decided to bake homemade apple pies to feed the hungry. Each year, the St. Mary School fifth-graders participate in baking apple pies for the church’s community supper, which is offered to the public and open to those who may be in need of a hot meal or just the company of others.
Parents and grandparent volunteers work in the kitchen to peel apples for each pie while the students gather needed ingredients and create an assembly line.
Student Megan Bender bragged, “We ran out of apples three times and had to wait for more.”
Briana Shirkey said, “It was messy and fun.”
During the next community supper, the fifth-graders will also volunteer to help serve the meal and be waiters and waitresses for the night.
Fourth-grade teacher, Megan Tracy, explained to the students that many of those who come like the meal that is served, but look forward to the dessert options the most.
She said, “Some people who come don’t have the chance to enjoy homemade desserts often and it’s usually the first thing they look for when they come in.”
The students are excited to share their creations with the community who attends.
Fifth-grader Adam Zielinski said, “I saw the finished projects and they looked good.”
Each student will surely take away more than just a baking lesson from this activity. The school’s hope is that students will be inspired to serve others in different ways when they can throughout their lives.
Lego Club
Principal Mary Petelin and teacher Carla Solomon started a new after school Lego club this week. The club hopes to combine children’s love of Legos with team building and project planning components. The students are excited to get together and share new ideas for construction and future projects.
