News Anchor Visits Cardinal
WFMJ TV-21 news anchor Derek Steyer visited Cardinal middle and high school communications classes on Oct. 7. Steyer, who anchors the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news for the Youngstown station, spoke to the classes about his career, the broadcast news industry, employment opportunities and the educational path students should consider following if they’re interested in a career in the field. He also took time to answer questions.
Students in Mr. Kruse’s eighth-grade communications class recently started recording their daily announcements in front of a green screen funded by the PTA. The class invited Steyer to be a guest anchor for the day’s announcements. These and all other middle school announcements can be found on YouTube.
Steyer also recorded an introduction for the high school weekly announcements after he finished speaking to that class. He also took time to talk to the students about the work they’ve been doing with their new green room and editing suite. Their announcements can be found in the Student Showcase section of the high school webpage.
Career Exploration
Career Day for the eighth-graders was a success. Students had the opportunity to spend the day visiting several different employers in the area including Dillen, Hexpol/Gold Key, UH-Geauga and the Middlefield Fire Department. During lunch at the fire department, students learned more about careers in law enforcement from Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland and K-9 officer Midge. Members of the fire department also spoke to the class and then did an outside demonstration on how they use the Jaws of Life in car accidents.
Thank you to those who organized the day and to everyone who participated and shared his or her insight with the students.
Generous Donors Thanked
The Cardinal Local School District is extremely grateful to the support of local businesses and organizations for providing generous donations to the schools. Recently, Friends of Mike donated a significant amount of money to the pay to participate fund. Al’s Plumbing and Russell-Sly Funeral Home have sponsored the purchase of a new softball scoreboard, and Preston Auto has sponsored “phase one” of placing team athletic record boards in the gym lobby at the high school.
Cornerstone Bible Church recently donated new picnic tables and students at the middle school have been using them on nice days to do outside classwork. The district is also grateful to a donation made by an alumnus that will assist in covering the cost of new biology equipment.
Heartfelt thanks go out to all who have donated to the district – the students have a great place to learn because of everyone. Huskie Pride.
