Science Olympians Excel

It was a Midwest showdown on Jan. 7 when the high school Chardon Science Olympiad competed at the Westlake Invitational held at Westlake High School. The Chardon Olympians went head-to-head with students from 59 schools hailing from Ohio and Michigan.

Chardon High School team placed seventh overall and individual event awards included: third place – Ecology (Emily Muñoz and Nick Schragal) and Remote Sensing (Nick Schragal and Colby Williams); fourth place – Disease Detectives (Arman Bayat and Richie Wainio); fifth place – Invasive Species (Emily Muñoz and Asher Vokoun), Rocks and Minerals (Asher Vokoun) and Towers (Richie Wainio and Arman Bayat); sixth place – Game ON (Colby and Drew Williams); and seventh place – Experimental Design (Alex Schragal, Richie Wainio and Drew Williams) and Forensics (Liam Kerry and Emily Stern).

The goal of Science Olympiad is to improve the quality of science education through competitions similar to sporting events. Students compete in 23 events related to social science, Earth and space science, physical science and chemistry, technology and engineering, and inquiry and natural science.

The Chardon Science Olympiad teams are led by Dr. Anne Clouser and Jake Adams, with competition events mentored by community volunteers, including experts, professionals and team parents. Past teams have attended the national tournament several times and each group works towards the goal of competing nationally each season.

The 2017 National Tournament will be held in Ohio at Wright State University May 19-20. For more information about the program or to donate towards competition fees and/or supplies, visit www.chardonscienceolympiad.org.

Senior Raises Funds for Veterans

Chardon High School student Taylor Purchase held a local fundraiser on Dec. 16 with a Christmas lighting display at her home as part of her senior project Hilltoppers for Veterans. The event was well attended and the end result was a donation of $1,000 to the Chardon VFW Post 6519. She presented the donation at the Jan. 5 meeting of the Post.

Taylor’s commitment to the lighting project and her involvement with the Veterans Day program at Maple Elementary School shows a deep respect for veterans.
