NDCL’s steadily growing robotics team dramatically improved its performance over last year by finishing 13th in a field of 28 tough teams from throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania at the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament at Cuyahoga Community College East earlier this month. The FIRST Tech Challenge requires teams of students to design, build, test and program autonomous and driver-operated robots that must perform a series of tasks in head-to-head competition with other teams.
Mock Trial Sweeps Competition
Both mock trial teams swept their way to four separate trial victories on Jan. 20 at the district competition at the Lake County Courthouse in Painesville. This year’s case focused on the timely issue of defamation of a public official by a news station. Social studies teacher Alex Dowger and English teacher Victoria Frabotta ’86 advise the team, which has already begun strategizing for the regional trials at Cuyahoga County’s Old Courthouse in downtown Cleveland on Feb. 10.
Team members owe much of their success to alumni and parent volunteers who served as legal advisors, including Matt Lallo ’02, Shawn Maestle and Martin Delahunty. Jeff Black and Dennis Fogarty provided legal assistance as needed.
The Legal Lions network of professional support also included Michelle DeBaltzo ’88 and Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge Deena Calabrese ’89. Chardon Municipal Court Judge Terri Stupica once again officiated over scrimmages in her courtroom in preparation for district competition.
