Geauga Dairymen

On March 6, Geauga Dairymen 4-H Club did a window display at the Berkshire Hathaway on the Square to promote 4-H Week. Members painted the window and designed it. They were supposed to take it down at the end of March, but the ladies who own Berkshire Hathaway decided to keep it longer because they liked it so much. The Geauga Dairymen got third place on the window out of 26 entries.

The next meeting was held at Emma Niehus’s house on April 12 at 3 p.m. Nine members attended the meeting. They started off the meeting by signing leasing agreements for their new animals this year. They had to pay $30 dollars for the animals. The new leasing agreement makes members go to the barn two to three times a week now. Members get their animals June 1.

The club discussed candy bar sales. Each member can choose how much he or she wants to sell, keeping in mind that there is 60 bars per box. Each bar costs $1. Some of the money goes to the adviser’s committee. The committee provides money and supplies for clubs. The other amount of the money goes to the club so it can buy supplies for the club and animals.

Members also discussed the yard cleanup, which is to be announced, but the club wants to do it. There will be a meeting held at the yard cleanup, too.

The group talked about Dairy Palooza at the Trumbull Country Fairgrounds on May 2. Members are expected to be there at 8 a.m. Everyone who attends gets a T-shirt, including parents. There are also many prizes to win, too. The members that are attending are recommended to wear boots and old, warm clothes.

There are also training opportunities for offices and the deadline for the signup dates are April 23. Members were also reminded that the 4-H camp signups are due on April 30.

There are also opportunities for public speaking. The people speaking talk about something they love to do and the judges tell them how to improve their speaking. The activity counts towards honor club. The deadline to sign up is May 21.

Members also discussed photography. Members can submit their pictures toward this club, and if they win, they can earn money.

The club also decided to participate in family affairs. It is a very nice thing to do and members donate money to less fortunate families. The club decided to donate $100.

The next meeting is planned for May 17, but the location is not known yet. The Niehus family provided the group with a bunch of different cheeses to try. They were very good. The group could also go see the cows in the barn, too.

The March 15 meeting was held at Munson Town Hall. Shannon Lewis made a health report on concussions and Mike Soltis gave a report on flooding.

Members had pizza before leaving the meeting to go roller-skating and on March 28, some members visited Holly Hill Nursing Home. They made meal bags for Meals on Wheels and want to thank the Taylor girls for making a wonderful window display.

The club will be having a candy bar sale as a fundraiser and the club will sponsor the maple tap at Camp White Wood.

4-H camp scholarships are available. Members must attend Quality Assurance on May 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. (Submitted by Mike Fenstermaker, news reporter)
