Auburn Swine

On April 10, the Auburn Swine 4-H Club met for its monthly meeting. Before the meeting, the officers of the different positions went to officer training. In the training, the officers learned what to do in their new positions. Each position has many responsibilities. The training and the meeting that followed took place in the Patterson Center on the Geauga County Fairgrounds.

Topics were discussed at the meeting, one of which was the effort to do some fundraising. One fundraiser this year will be selling Malley’s chocolate bars and Welch’s Fruit Snacks, benefitting all Geauga County 4-H members.

The other big fundraiser is the club’s upcoming pig roast that will benefit the club directly. The menu for the pig roast will include pulled pork, chicken, vegetables, pasta salad, potatoes and desserts. It is scheduled for May 21 from 4-8 p.m. The cost is $20 per ticket for an adult, $8 for children 6-12 and free for children under 5. To purchase tickets, please email Jodi Durkee at daisyblue232@yahoo.com or Nikki Genske at ngenske91@gmail.com.

The 4H Quality Assurance date for members is set for May 14 at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. The next meeting is scheduled for May 1 at the Patterson Center. (Submitted by Garret Tomasek, news reporter)

Geauga Dairymen

On April 10, Geauga Dairymen 4-H Club held a meeting at Brenda Hasting’s house. Members did the pledges first and then went over old business. They reviewed that Dairy Poolza was taking place on April 30. All members were really excited.

After that, Mark and Paul did a demonstration, which was on the six classes of nutrients and the common sickness that cows catch. There was much information presented and everyone learned a lot. The quality assurance is taking place on May 14, but if members were attending Dairy Poolza, they test out of Dairy Poolza.

Another test coming up is skillathon on July 16. This is where the 4-H instructor tests members’ knowledge over basic cow information. It is the test into fair.

Anyone who has ever wanted to be a king or a queen has a chance. The interviews are coming up for anyone involved in dairy who has an interest in being king or queen of the Great Geauga County Fair. The interviews take place the second Saturday in July at the fairgrounds. Make sure to send in a resume with all one’s accomplishments to the fair board.

The club decided on selling candy bars again this year. They are Malley’s candy bars and are $1 each. The club decided to only get one box this year, which has the profit outcome of $9. There are four possible flavors, but the club decided on milk crunch.

In addition, there is a 4-H car wash happening on May 14 to support the local counselors for Camp Whitewood. The car wash is happening from 1-4 p.m.

There are also officer positions available and they count towards honor club. Everyone got their assigned cow at this meeting and received a picture of them and their information. Members typically get the animals around July.

Lastly, the club went over the Hoard’s Dairymen winners and the winners get a special prize. The next meeting is May 22.

To conclude the meeting, members did a word search and then ate dinner of sloppy joes – they were delicious.
