Welcome New Administrators
The Chardon School District could not be more excited about its new administrators: Kelly Moran, Doug Higham and Linda Elegante, who will bring their wisdom and expertise to an already top-notch administrative team.
Dr. Moran has been named the new principal at Maple Elementary School. She joins the district from the Kirtland Schools, where she was most recently the director of curriculum.
At Chardon Middle School, Doug Higham has been named principal. He spent 12 years as a classroom teacher before serving as an assistant principal in Twinsburg for the past five years.
The district also welcomes Linda Elegant, the new director of student services (formerly the Office for Exceptional Children). Mrs Elegante joins Chardon from the Mentor Schools, where she served as a special education supervisor for the past five years and prior to that was a classroom teacher and elementary principal.
If one has the chance, be sure to drop by and introduce oneself to the newest team members.
Child Find
As required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004), the Chardon Local School District is conducting the annual Child Find campaign to locate, identify and evaluate all children with disabilities from birth through age 21 residing within the school district. This includes Chardon children with disabilities who are homeless, wards of the state or attending nonpublic schools, regardless of the severity of the disability.
Upon being notified of a child who has a disability or is suspected of having a disability, Chardon School District personnel will collaborate with the child’s parent(s) or guardian(s) regarding a referral for assistance. The referral and all additional information provided will be used to determine the appropriate intervention procedures to follow.
Interventions addressing areas of concern will be implemented and monitored by the parents and school team. Evaluations will be conducted when additional information is necessary to determine eligibility for special education.
If you know of a child with a disability, or a child suspected of having a disability, who is not currently receiving appropriate educational and related services, please contact Linda Elegante, director of student services at 440-286-0460.
Seventh-Grade Immunizations
All seventh graders in Ohio are required to have a booster shot in the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis series.
You must provide the school with written verification of either Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis, adult and adolescent formulation) or Td (tetanus, diphtheria, and adult) from your health provider. Failure to do so will result in exclusion from school until the requirement is met.
This requirement is a new state law. Please contact your child’s physician now to see if your child has already had this shot or to make arrangements to receive it.
This vaccination can be obtained through the Geauga County General Health District at no cost to Geauga residents. The health district holds monthly walk-in immunization clinics.
The next opportunity is Sept. 9 from 3-6 p.m. Students without this immun-ization will be excluded from school starting Sept. 10.
