Geauga Dairymen

The Geauga Dairymen 4-H Club held a meeting on May 7. The meeting started with a salute to the flag and the 4-H pledge.

The members recapped their recent community service activities. On April 21, the club did a spring yard cleanup for an elderly homeowner. The club also voted to donate a basket and provide baked goods to the Brad Wells benefit dinner in April.

Member Vincent Ferrante was voted health and safety officer. Members shared what they learned at the countywide club officer training and the 2013 Dairy Palooza in Wooster. Each member will send a thank-you note to one of the Dairy Palooza sponsors.

Project Record Books and Dairy Resource Handbooks were distributed to the members. Skill-a-thon materials were introduced to the new members. Skill-a-thon is mandatory and will take place on July 13 at the Geauga County Fairgrounds.

Opportunities for learning and community service were presented; Livestock Farm to Table tour, 4-H public speaking contest, food-a-thon, Lake County Captains 4-H night and Cleveland Indians 4-H Go Green event. Fundraiser candy bars were handed out.

After the meeting was adjourned, members started working with their project animals. The advisor displayed the supplies needed to care for dairy animals and reviewed how to put a halter on a cow. All the members either have an animal to take to the fair or will be selecting one soon.

The next meeting will be held in June.
