Move With Monarchs

Catch up with this season’s stunning monarch butterflies and more during Monarchs & Meadow Insects – at Frohring Meadows on Sept. 11 and at Orchard Hills Park on Sept. 18, both from 12:30-4 p.m.

Use the park district’s nets or bring one’s own to catch a variety of butterflies, grasshoppers, praying mantids, katydids, beetles and other meadow insects.

Join in at any time without registration. Sun protection, socks, a hat and long pants are strongly recommended for moving through the meadows.

Plus, should one catch a monarch, a naturalist will be on hand to tag and release it. Provide one’s contact information to be notified if the monarch is later recovered in Mexico.

Learn To Boulder

Sept. 11

For anyone ages 10-17 looking to learn rock climbing from a pro, there’s still room available in Bouldering for Beginners sessions at Claridon Woodlands freeform boulder wall. All will be led by Ian Young, the head routesetter at Shaker Rock Gym.

Sessions will be Sept. 11, from 1-2:30 p.m. or 3-4:30 p.m. Wear a good pair of tennis shoes and bring a completed and signed waiver. Additionally, an adult must remain onsite with each climber.

The intro class will cover why bouldering is great training for other climbing disciplines. Participants will learn the name of different rock holds, which type of grips needed to maneuver them and body positioning.
