Climb, Ride, Glide & Play
The park district reopens its ropes and boats recreational offerings for the season on May 27.
New this year, Claridon Woodlands’ ropes course is now saving Thursdays for outside corporate or camp groups with variable schedules, which require at least two weeks’ prior notice to reserve. Contact Trevor at 440-226-2548 for more information.
The course features platforms 32 feet off the ground, linked by eight 23-to-32-foot-long challenge elements, and a 100-foot-long zipline exit. Access is free to all Geauga County residents.
To learn age requirements, weight restrictions and more, visit the park district website before heading out to Claridon Woodlands. Reservations are highly recommended.
High ropes will typically be open for hour-long sessions Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Fridays; and Thursdays for special groups.
There is also a 12-foot-high, 900-square-foot freeform boulder wall, complete with new 2023 routes.
For those craving a warm-weather adventure, head to Headwaters Park’s boathouse for kayak, canoe and paddleboat borrowing on a first-come, first-served basis. County residents can borrow boats for free up to two hours for canoe and kayak and one hour max for paddleboats.
The park’s limited number of kayaks, canoes and paddleboats will typically be available to borrow Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last boats out at 4 p.m.; and Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m., with last boats out at 6 p.m.
Fish Stocking
Geauga Park District is stocking waterways at four parks this spring: Big Creek Park’s Chestnut Pond (largemouth bass and bluegill); Big Creek Park’s Wild Goose Pond(largemouth bass and bluegill); and Big Creek Park’s Tupelo Pond (bluegill).
A second round of stocking rainbow trout will take place this fall at Beartown Lakes Reservation’s Lower Bear Lake.
Stocking notifications are posted on the park district’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Families are welcome to catch and take fish from waterways in 12 park district parks as long as they have a current Ohio fishing license in accordance with state regulations.
Fishing locations and their inhabiting species, as well as any upcoming fishing programs, can be found on the park district’s website.
To aide in stocking procedures in years to come, please email any pictures of fish caught in Geauga Park District with location and size of fish to jsafick@geaugaparkdistrict.org.
Musical Showcase
For 16 years, Geauga Park District’s Maple Town Tune Traders have shared a variety of music at The West Woods Nature Center the fourth Thursday of each month.
Tune Traders are a fine showcase of music – blues, country, classical, vintage pop, Celtic, traditional and modern folk music, and even a bit of rock – with participants playing, singing or simply enjoying as audience. All genres, instruments and skill levels are welcome.
Spring’s scheduled sessions are May 25 and June 22. From 7-9:30 p.m., participating singers and musicians take turns, round-robin style, presenting tunes for others to join in.
For novice musicians, this format also provides great chances to watch and learn, play along and hone skills with a supportive audience as you work up to a more polished level. And for student musicians preparing for an upcoming recital or performance, Tune Traders provides a gentle, encouraging audience, with applause and praise guaranteed from people who celebrate young musicianship.
Audience members, meanwhile, just enjoy a relaxing evening of well-rendered music.
Registration is required to participate as a musician or an audience member Admission is free.
For more information, contact the Tune Traders’ naturalist host Denise Wolfe at 440-226-2877.
