Beginners and experienced producers wishing to hone sugaring skills will learn everything they need to know, including tree biology and identification, why sap flows, tapping, collecting methods, sugarbush management, producing the finished product, canning and packaging, as well as local sugaring history.

Maple 101 Workshop

Feb. 10, 9 a.m. to noon

Beginners and experienced producers wishing to hone sugaring skills will learn everything they need to know, including tree biology and identification, why sap flows, tapping, collecting methods, sugarbush management, producing the finished product, canning and packaging, as well as local sugaring history. The free workshop will be held at The West Woods, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Arts In The Parks

Geauga Park District is offering a series of new arts experiences and workshops while the snow flies.

• Meet the Artists: Julie Cook & Hap Howle

Feb. 9, 7-9 p.m.,

Meet Julie Cook, of Madison, and Hap Howle, of Thompson, and view each artist’s diverse work inspired by nature at the West Woods Nature Center. Refreshments served.

• Maple Town Tune Traders 

Feb. 22, 7-10 p.m.

Singers and musicians, sign up for a short performance spot followed by a jam session at the West Woods Nature Center. All musical genres, instruments and musicianship levels welcome. Come to play, sing or simply enjoy as audience. Snacks to share welcome.

• Sap Bucket Painting Workshop

Feb. 23, 6:30-9 p.m.

Join artist Robert Kolcum to paint a beautiful woodland sugaring scene on a sap bucket at the West Woods Nature Center. Wine and cheese served. Fee of $35 per person includes all materials and refreshments. Ages 21+. Dress for mess and bring an old shirt/smock. Registration required.

• “Full Moon Rising” Glass Painting Workshop

March 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Join Jeannie Carder Shimek from Artifacts Gift Studio to paint a rising moon motif on a set of two drink glasses, which may also be utilized as candleholders, at Observatory Park, Robert McCullough Science Center. Refreshments will be served. Fee of $30 includes all materials and refreshments, including non-alcoholic beverages. Participants may also bring their beverage of choice. Ages 15+. Registration required.
