Fish Stocking
Geauga Park District will be stocking six waterways at the following four county parks this spring:
- Orchard Hills Park(largemouth bass and bluegill)
- Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve (yellow perch)
- Tupelo Pond in Big Creek Park (largemouth bass)
- Beartown Lakes Reservation’s Lower Bear Lake and Middle Bear Lake (largemouth bass and channel catfish)
- Swine Creek Reservation’s Lodge Pond(largemouth bass and bluegill)

Families are always welcome to catch and take fish from waterways in seven park district parks as long as they have a current Ohio fishing license in accordance with state regulations.
Location tips, inhabiting species and upcoming fishing programs are posted on the park district website.
Plans for later in the year also include the stocking this fall of rainbow trout at Beartown Lake Reservation’s Lower Bear Lake, as well as largemouth bass and bluegill at Swine Creek Reservation’s Killdeer Pond.
Earth Day Extravaganza
April 22, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Celebrate Earth Day locally during this interactive event where wildlife and conservation experts will engage and educate you and your family and friends. Activities include expert talks, hands-on activities, educational and stewardship walks and more. Hosted by Geauga Park District’s Natural Resource Management staff at The West Woods, 9465 Kinsman Road, Russell Township.
West Woods Wednesdays
Geauga Park District’s West Woods Wednesdays Farm Marketmoves this summer to the second Wednesday of each month, June to September – a one-stop shop for farm-fresh needs.
On top of vendors providing all kinds of locally made/grown items from 4-7 p.m., an onsite food truck will be serving dinner and snack options for purchase.
The park district is still accepting applications from interested farm market vendors, particularly those with fresh produce, flowers, breads/baked items and similar products.
Register for Caveman Crawl
June 10, 7-11 a.m.
Registration is now open for the eighth annual Caveman Crawl 5K Trail Run & 1-Mile Fun Walkthrough the wooded hills of The West Woods – caveman and cavewoman costumes are encouraged.
Registration is from 7-8:30 a.m., costume contest is at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Walkers welcome in the 5K or 1-Mile Fun Walk.
Applications available at http://bit.ly/gpdcaveman, at The West Woods Nature Center and at Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center. Advanced registration fee is $20; additional fee charged day of race. Course is primarily well-graded dirt and gravel with minimal pavement running.
There will be unique awards for winning runners and most creative costumes. Perfect Occasion Costumes and Magic in Middlefield is offering 15 percent off retail merchandise and 20 percent off rentals for Caveman Crawl costumes.
Proceeds benefit the Chip Henry Institute for Outdoor Adventure. Registration is required.
Spring Workshops
Registration is open for two unique nature-themed workshops.
Mason Bee Box Building Workshop
April 28, 10 a.m. to noon
Swine Creek Reservation, Lodge
Enjoy a short presentation about Mason bees and then build a box to help attract these beneficial insects to one’s yard. Bring a pair of pruners/scissors and a hammer. Fee is $10.
Kokedama String Garden Workshop
May 25, 6:30-8 p.m.
The West Woods, Nature Center
Kokedama is a form of centuries-old Japanese garden art tied into the practice of bonsai. Join artisan Tracy Reid to create two beautiful Kokedama hanging moss ball planters. All materials and refreshments are included in the $24 fee.
