 Volunteer Bike Patrol

Along The Maple Highlands Trail, now stretching more than 21 miles across the entirety of Geauga County, riders may very likely encounter someone riding along in a heather gray athletic shirt sporting a yellow biking logo on the back. That person is a member of Geauga Park District’s Volunteer Bike Patrol, and they are there to help keep the trail safe and maintained.

Volunteer Bike Patrol members are responsible for possessing knowledge of the trails and parks, including the new southern section of The Maple Highlands Trail; directing patron questions to the proper places; calling a ranger in case of trees or wires down, damage to park property, insect nests or wild animal sightings; and administering first aid or help for patrons in need, or calling 911 in case of emergency.

Riders commit on a ride-as-much-or-as-little-as-you’d-like basis. Every little bit helps toward the greater good, and the cumulative effect can be quite powerful, with approximately 440 hours totaled in 2017.

To sign up as a Volunteer Bike Patrol member, a bike is all one needs; helmets are required, but can be provided to those who don’t already have them. Visit the park district website to complete an application.

Camp The Geauga County Parks

Camping out in Geauga Park District promises quality down time with friends and family, plus a chance to discover the beautiful natural resources in four different Geauga parks. The cost is $5 a night for county residents or $10 a night for out of county residents.

Big Creek Park, Headwaters Park and Chickagami Park all offer clean, well maintained, reservable campsites in scenic locations. They include lean-tos, each with a fireplace in the chimney, which can accommodate up to five people, and tent pads, which provide comfortable, well-drained surfaces for tents.

Two new tent pads were also added last year in primitive, off-the-beaten-trail locations within The West Woods. There are 31 primitive campsites from which to choose.

Camping reservations must be made at least seven days in advance of the visit. Non-reserved campsites are available first-come, first-served.

National Trails Day

Join a naturalist at 10 a.m. June 2 for a 7-mile hike of the preserve side of East Branch Reservoir at Headwaters Park that is not normally open to the public. Wooded lanes offer the possibility of wildlife sightings including eagles and osprey. Please pack a lunch and water bottle. A short portion of the walk will be on routes 608 and 322.

Registration is required. The hike is expected to wind up around 2 p.m. Participants must be 10 or older.

Call For Vendors: West Woods Wednesdays

Geauga Park District’s West Woods Wednesdays Farm Market moves this summer to the second Wednesday of each month, June to September – a one-stop shop for all farm-fresh needs.

On top of vendors providing all kinds of locally made/grown items from 4-7 p.m., an onsite food truck will be serving dinner and snack options for purchase.

The park district is still accepting applications from interested farm market vendors, particularly those with fresh produce, flowers, breads/baked items and similar products. Vendor applications are available online.
